Basic Differences: Standard 1 1/4 and King Size Papers

Rolling papers are generally offered in a handful of sizes. The most common are standard 1 1/4 papers and king size. Below, we will discuss how much fits in each, their best uses, and some tips to get the most out of each one.

Size and Typical Uses

Standard 1 1/4 papers are 76 to 78 mm long and are generally used for shorter, everyday rolls.

King size papers are 110 mm long and are generally used for longer, slower rolls.

How Much Fits in Each Rolling Paper?

How much your roll holds depends on both the paper size and the filter size.

The following chart shows roughly how many grams of a loose-leaf blend fit with each paper size and filter combination.

Paper Size 8 mm filter 10 mm filter 12 mm filter
Standard Paper (78 mm) 1 gram 1.6 grams 2.3 grams
King Size Paper (110 mm) 1.5 grams 2.5 grams 3.6 grams

Standard papers work well for everyday rolls. They are convenient, quick, and great when you are on the move.

King size papers work best when you want a longer, slower roll, and they leave more room for airflow with a wider filter.

Which Filter Size Goes With Which Paper?

  • 8mm: slim rolls in standard papers
  • 10mm: the everyday size, works in standard or king size
  • 12mm: wide, king-size rolls with plenty of airflow

Every Schtips set includes all three, so you can try each combination and find your favorite.

Wrap Up

When choosing between standard papers and king size papers, decide how big of a roll you'd like and try rolling with that. It's best to give them both a shot if you have the chance; it's good practice to roll with different sized papers and filters.
