Rolling Guides
A Simple Guide to Filter Size

Have you ever taken a draw and gotten a mouthful of loose bits? How about pulling through a soggy filter that keeps closing? Or a roll that makes you pull like you're trying to drink a thick milkshake out of a plastic straw? These experiences suck (heh), and we're here to make them better.
This guide will help you avoid all of that. Explore our full range of reusable filters here. We will review why size matters, the best uses for each size, and roughly how much each size holds.
How Does Filter Size Affect a Roll?
Filters do more than keep loose bits out of your mouth. Reusable filters create a firmer structure that makes rolling easier and helps maintain consistent airflow. They determine how fast your roll burns and how smooth the draw is, and they define the quality of the roll.
Smaller filters have tighter airflow for a more controlled draw, while larger filters open things up for a smoother, fuller draw.
Common Filter Sizes and Their Uses
8mm Filters: Small
The smallest filter we will discuss is the 8mm filter. This is a great option for a slim roll that is quick and convenient. It is about the diameter of a cigarette.
- Airflow: Tight and controlled
- Capacity: about 1 gram
- Best for: Slim, quick rolls on the go
10mm Filters: Medium
10mm filters are the everyday size. They are easy to roll, strike a healthy balance between a smooth draw and size, and work for almost any occasion. About the size of a AAA battery.
- Airflow: Smooth, full
- Capacity: about 1.6 grams
- Best for: Standard everyday rolls
12mm Filters: Large
For those who prefer wider rolls, we recommend a 12mm filter. These filters give a large, satisfying draw with great airflow. About the size of a Sharpie.
- Airflow: Open and clean
- Capacity: about 2.3 grams
- Best for: King-size papers and longer, slower rolls
Choosing the Best Size for You
How many grams with 1 1/4 papers (standard)
| Filter Size | Capacity (1 1/4 papers) |
| 8mm | 1 gram |
| 10mm | 1.6 grams |
| 12mm | 2.3 grams |
How many grams with king size papers (large)
| Filter Size | Capacity (king size papers) |
| 8mm | 1.5 grams |
| 10mm | 2.5 grams |
| 12mm | 3.6 grams |
These charts should give you a good idea of which filter size to use. The amounts are approximate for a loose-leaf blend and were tested with our filters, which measure exactly 8, 10, and 12 mm.
Try Our 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm Reusable Filters
If you want to feel the differences discussed above, testing multiple sizes side by side is the easiest way to understand what works best for you. Every Schtips design comes in a three-size set (8mm, 10mm, and 12mm) so you can compare airflow, draw, and fit without committing to a single size.
Each design is molded into the face of the filter with an open pattern that keeps your airflow consistent and smooth.
