Are Inexpensive Pre-Rolls Worth It?
If you've been to the dispensary and seen pre-rolls at an impressively low price, you've probably wondered how such a good deal could exist. Should you send it?
I'm not here to tell you what to do. I'll lay out the information that I am aware of, and you can make your decision from there.
Why Do Pre-Rolls Get a Bad Rap?
Pre-rolls have a bad reputation, and there is a reason for it. In particular, inexpensive pre-rolls are often filled with house shake or trim. This means that the dispensary or its cannabis providers filter out the good weed to sell on the shelves (where customers can see and smell what they are getting) while leaving the low quality extras for their pre-rolls, where the quality is hidden. Cannabis can be thought of as analogous to cereal. The weed they put in the pre-rolls is the dust at the bottom of the cereal bag. And not a sugary cereal. We're talking plain cheerio dust, no honey.
Pre-rolls are much more difficult and expensive to manufacture compared to cannabis alone. The process absorbs a lot of the cost, so you are left with much lower quality cannabis to make up for the time and effort it takes to manufacture pre-rolls.
Are High-Quality Pre-Rolls Worthwhile?
It's important to note: high-quality pre-rolls often times do not put low quality weed inside their joints. There are plenty of companies who sell pre-rolls that are top-notch. However, these pre-rolls are not a commodity. They are a luxury good, and they are priced accordingly.
If you are buying a pre-roll that costs less than a gram of good flower, you're not getting a luxury good. You're getting leftovers hiding behind paper.
Do Pre-Rolls Save You Money?
If you catch a crazy deal on pre-rolls and don't mind smoking low quality cannabis with leaves, stems, and even seeds in it, then you can save a few bucks. You are paying for the convenience of the joint being rolled and ready.
But in nearly every case, buying flower and rolling your own gives you better cannabis for less. If you buy your flower and roll your own joints, you'll have fresh cannabis from a much higher shelf compared to the pre-roll.
What If I Can't Roll a Joint?
If you haven't learned how to roll a joint, check out some of our other blog posts. We have information on joint rolling hacks, how to make your joint paper stick, and a guide to filter tip size. There are plenty of great tutorials on Youtube, and if you put the time in, it becomes a skill that is irreplaceable.
What If I Don't Want to Learn How to Roll a Joint?
Luckily, for those of you who really don't want to learn how to roll or don't have enough confidence, you can pick up a machine roller for very inexpensive. Once you pick it up, you'll ask yourself why you ever ordered a cheap pre-roll in the first place.
You can control the size of your joint with these rollers, and they roll a perfect tube every time. We sell a pack of an 8 mm, 10 mm, and 12 mm tip so that you can choose the size.
Final Thoughts
For most people, inexpensive pre-rolls are not the best option. You can spend much less and get much higher quality cannabis if you roll your joints yourself.
Do yourself a favor - next time you pick up an inexpensive pre-roll, rip it open. Look inside, and you will find colorless cannabis with trim, stems, and potentially seeds inside. Treat yourself better and save even more at the same time: pick up flower from the shelf and learn to roll.
